A new piece of fan art has been released, suggesting Eva Green for the role of Yennefer in the upcoming adaptation of The Witcher. The Witcher Saga first came to prominence as a set of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. First published in 1993, they have since been adapted a film, a series of graphic novels, and most notably a hugely popular franchise of video games. The world of The Continent will next be seen on the small screen, with Netflix ordering a fresh adaptation to series, set to air sometime in 2020.
The stories follow the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, a supernaturally-gifted monster hunter, as he finds himself drawn into a dangerous world of political and royal intrigue in order to protect his adopted daughter, Ciri. The show has already announced that Justice League’s Henry Cavill will be their Geralt, to a mixed (but mostly positive) reaction. Casting has since gotten underway to cast the other main characters, including Yennefer, the love of Geralt’s life and mother-figure to Ciri. The character of Ciri will apparently be reimagined as a BAME character, leading to an intense backlash and showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich leaving Twitter.

Hardcore fans of the series will no doubt be engaged in furious debate as to who could (and should) fill those roles right up until (and even long after) an official announcement is made. A Reddit user by the name of 1vergil, however, believes they have already found the perfect candidate. In a poster of their own making, they depict Yennefer, complete with her trademark violet eyes, as being played by Green. Check it out below:
Some recent audition tapes offered a glimpse at what to expect from this version of the character. Known as The Lady of Vengerberg, Yennefer is a powerful sorceress that is over a century old, despite looking infinitely younger. Her story is a rich and complex one, even before she crosses paths with Geralt and Ciri. With only eight episodes ordered thus far, it remains to be seen how much of it will be explored by Hissrich and Alik Sakharov (who will direct the bulk of the episodes). Either way, the character will no doubt by a highly sought after one, with a wealth of material for an actress to sink their teeth into.
Whether Green has any interest in the role or even knows of it, is anybody’s guess. Regardless, she is certainly a pick that could appease even the most hardcore of Witcher devotees. In an age where accuracy to the source material seems to be essential, Green definitely looks the part, right down to the jet-black hair. Though the violet eyes could prove tricky, as they did when bringing Daenerys to life on Game of Thrones, there are plenty of options to explore in that regard. More importantly, Green certainly has the right presence for the character. Having played such as Vanessa Ives on Penny Dreadful and Miss Peregrine in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Green could embody such powerful, nuanced, and otherworldly characters in her sleep.
The only thing that could go against her casting is the fact that she falls slightly outside of the age range that the show has announced for the character. Then again, Green could never exactly be described as looking her age. With the character essentially meant to be ageless, it could prove more of an issue later on, especially if the show has a lengthy run. Audiences were able to overlook similar issues in the past, however, with such as David Boreanaz visibly aging over the course of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, despite playing a vampire. As such, there’s no reason fans couldn’t do the same here. And if it means getting an actress of Green’s caliber in the role, most would probably be okay with the character even being tweaked as necessary.
